The muscles cover the main framework of the skeleton. Muscles are responsible for about 50% of our body weight.
They permit movement and some are attached to the bones.

There are two types of muscles:

• Voluntary muscles:
Voluntary muscles are used when walking or writing etc. they are under are conscious control.

• Involuntary muscles:
Involuntary muscles are involved in the movement of the heart, digestion, respiration etc. They are outside the conscious control.

Muscles consist of contractile or elastic fibres, bound together by a thick band usually a spindle shape containing a sheath.
This sheath is extended to form strong fibrous bands known as tendons by means of where they are fastened to the bones.

Muscles are well supplied with arteries to bring them food for fuel to repair themselves and oxygen combustion.
Veins carry away waste and toxins such as carbon dioxide.

These are the following groups of muscles and their action they perform:

• An Extensor - Extends the limbs
• A Flexor - Flexes a Limb
• An Adductor - Bends a Limb towards the median line
• An Abductor - Takes a Limb away from the median line
• A Supinator - Surrounds and closes an orifice or opening
• A Pronator - Turns a limb to face downwards.
• Rotator - Rotates a limb
