18-24th September is World Reflexology Week.

We are celebrating World Reflexology Week by offering £5 off Reflexology appointments taking place at our Horley treatment room between 20th and 27th September. All you need to do is quote “Reflexology Special” on your booking form to receive your discount!

Reflexology is an alternative medical practice involving the application of pressure to specific points on the feet and hands. This is done using thumb, finger, and hand massage techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a pseudoscientific system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work on the feet and hands causes a physical change to the supposedly related areas of the body.

In the 1890s, British scientists found that nerves connect the skin and internal organs. They also found that the body’s entire nervous system tends to adjust to outside factors, including touch.

A reflexologist’s touch may help to calm the central nervous system, promoting relaxation and other benefits just like any form of massage.

Others believe that the brain creates pain as a subjective experience. Sometimes, the brain reacts to physical pain. But in other cases, it may create pain in response to emotional or mental distress.

Some believe that reflexology can reduce pain through calming touch, which may help to improve someone’s mood and reduce stress.

What happens in an appointment?

A typical treatment is 30 to 60 minutes long and begins with a quick health history and consultation about your health and lifestyle. The reflexologist will use the information to customize the therapy. You may then be asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably in a reclining chair or on a massage table. The reflexologist will assess the feet and stimulate various points to identify areas of tenderness or tension. Brisk movements and massage may be used to warm the hands and feet. Finger or thumb pressure is then applied to the foot using reflexology techniques. Lotion or oil may be used, and the reflexologist may also use instruments like balls, brushes, and dowels.

Reflexology is a very relaxing treatment that can also help during pregnancy so if you are waiting for the baby to arrive then this could also help speed things along.

If you are new to massage then this is a must try unless you have ticklish feet then probably not for you!

If not, you're missing out on a wonderfully relaxing, healing and spiritual experience. People who receive this unique and traditional Hawaiian Massage rave about the healing effects on both mind and body.

What is Lomi Lomi Massage?

Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that uses a combination of massage techniques, nut oils (Macadamia, palm and coconut), and elements of breathing to restore energy and soothe the body.

Its principles are that the massage works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes. This allows the recipient to relax and give in to the nurturing touch. It also works from the belief that memories are not just stored in the brain and mind, but also in every cell of the human body. The long, continuous strokes of the massage are designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours, which can cause as many stresses and strains as muscle tension.

What can I expect from a Lomi Lomi Massage?

Traditionally, we perform this massage with the recipient lying on a hand-woven mat on the floor. However, you may find yourself on a conventional massage table, or lying directly on the vinyl of it. Instead of being covered with towels, you might just have one towel or a small sheet to preserve your modesty. These steps are taken to avoid interrupting the continuous flow of the massage.

The therapist will usually begin the Lomi Lomi healing practice with a period of stillness between therapist and recipient. Sometimes the therapist's hands will rest lightly on the recipient's back.

The therapist will work with your body, with fluid, rhythmic strokes to release and shift tensions. The treatment may be slow and relaxing or faster and more invigorating, depending on how your body responds. You might find that the therapist massages two different parts of your body simultaneously. This is to stop your brain from focusing on any one area and therefore helps to aid relaxation.  They may make full-body or under-body strokes, lightly stretch your limbs and carefully rotate your joints. These techniques are thought to free up your energy flow, and they will be performed very gently, staying within your comfort zone and level of resistance.

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it! So go on, relax and enjoy with a Lomi Lomi Massage - book yours now!

Please note that Lomi Lomi Massage is only available to females.

At A Healing Touch we’re all about self-care. It’s so important to take care of yourself – not just your body, but you mind too. Getting started with mindfulness can be another part of your self-care routine. Treating yourself to regular treatments is also extremely important in this.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the basic ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing. It also means to not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on in the world around us. Mindful.org say 'The goal of mindfulness is to wake up to the inner workings of our mental, emotional, and physical processes'.

There is always there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodelling the physical structure of your brain.

How do I practice mindfulness?

Mindfulness is available to us in every moment, whether through meditation or mindful moment practices, which can be as simple as taking a moment to breathe before answering the phone, instead of answering it immediately.

The basics of mindfulness practice

Here’s how to tune into mindfulness throughout the day (taken from mindful.org):

  1. Set aside some time. You don’t need a meditation cushion or bench, or any sort of special equipment to access your mindfulness skills—but you do need to set aside some time and space.
  2. Observe the present moment as it is. The aim of mindfulness is not quieting the mind, or attempting to achieve a state of eternal calm. The goal is simple: we’re aiming to pay attention to the present moment, without judgment. Easier said than done, we know.
  3. Let your judgments roll by. When we notice judgments arise during our practice, we can make a mental note of them, and let them pass.
  4. Return to observing the present moment as it is. Our minds often get carried away in thought. That’s why mindfulness is the practice of returning, again and again, to the present moment.
  5. Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself for whatever thoughts crop up, just practice recognizing when your mind has wandered off, and gently bring it back.

That’s the practice. It’s often been said that it’s very simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. The work is to just keep doing it.  A great website to look about getting started with Mindfulness is www.mindful.org

Summer seems like a distance memory and Autumn is nearly over and the cold winter mornings will soon be here so here are our top tips to keep yourself fit & healthy this winter! With the leaves on the trees changing colour, the temperature dropping and the days getting shorter, we must remember the need to keep up a healthy, sustainable lifestyle, in order to stay fresh, revitalized and youthful!

  1. Go for a jog in the early misty mornings

Top Tips to keep yourself fit & healthy this winter! It can be tough dragging yourself out of bed in the morning, especially when it is still dark outside but starting the day with a 20-minute jog or fast-paced walk can set you up for the day. It will help with the strengthening muscles, improving circulation and increase your cardiovascular fitness.

2.Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.

The human body is made up of around 70% water. You would think that is plenty to keep you going - but officials say adults should aim to drink at least 2 litres of water each day. Regular water consumption is vital for keeping up energy levels and brain functionality. It also helps to keep your skin clear and flush out any toxins.

  1. Reduce feelings of stress

Many of us suffer with feelings of stress each and every day, whether it stems from a heavy work schedule, marital problems or just the usual day-to-day worries.  Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health - regular exercise, meditation and positive thoughts can all help combat negative feelings, leading to a more positive outlook on life.

4. Get more rest!

Are you constantly feeling like you could do with a couple of extra hours of sleep? A good night’s rest is necessary for the body to re-vitalize itself and be able to function to its maximum capacity. If you are getting less than 8 hours a night, it might be time to wind down and get to bed at a reasonable time!

5. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage

How does a relaxing massage sound? It sounds like just what the doctor ordered, right?! Well, you are in luck - you can book yourself in for a treatment today from just £30! For full details of all our different treatments head to Treatments!

We hope our tops tips for keeping fit and healthy this winter were helpful and if you need any advice about our treatments do not hesitate to get in touch.
